I drink coffee almost every morning. Its a habit, I enjoy it. But after a cup or two I don’t think about coffee til the next day. Now I have heard of a few people mention Coffee Marinated Steak and my first impression was that’s stupid. Why would you marinate a steak in coffee? Do you want it wide awake when it hits the grill? Sorry, that was stupid.
So we went down to Hilton Head on vacation a couple of weeks ago. One night we ate out at a place called Frankie Bones. Turns out their signature dish is a coffee marinated ribeye. My friend Keith swore that it was the best thing on the menu. So I tried it. OMG! It was one of the best steaks I have ever eaten! I am talking in the top 5 steaks of all time! So I had to try to make it once we got home.
It came out great!
I let it sit in the marinade for about 35 hours. I think it could even have gone even longer. At Frankie Bones they say it gets marinated for 2 days.
I like a steak with some onions, peppers, and mushrooms,
So I cut them up and threw them into a pan.
I started cooking the onions and mushrooms in a bit of butter.
Once it cooked down a bit I poured in the marinade. That’s right, don’t throw away that marinade, cook it with the onions peppers and mushrooms and you will get some great flavor!
I cooked it down a bit then added the peppers last, because I like them on the crunchy side.
I grilled the steak for 5 minutes on the first side, then flipped it for 4 more minutes. I then let it rest for about 15 minutes covered in foil.
I then sliced it up. I also have to cut up the end piece for our dog Polly. Yes, she is horribly spoiled.
I served it with the mushrooms, onions, and peppers.
So I am now a believer. Coffee marinated steak is pretty awesome.
