I tried to make some Sourdough burger buns from scratch. This was not my proudest moment.
Sure, they don’t look too bad in the picture, if you try not to think of them as horribly misshapen burger buns. Did I completely forget how to make circles? Kindergarten can’t be that long ago for me?
They were a bit flat.
Almost looked like flat bagels.
And while they did not rise to the fluffiness I was picturing in my mind, they did taste pretty good. Which I was happy about, because these took a bit of work to get to this point. I did not buy or borrow a sourdough starter, I tried to make my own. Took me about a week and a half. I will post details later, once I get that process perfected. Or reasonably perfected.
I have to say, even though the bread is being classified as a “Fail,” the meal itself was really pretty good. It was a Bourbon Glazed Burger with onions and peppers.
I will be making this again. Once I figure out the whole bread thing.
The glaze was pretty simple to make, mix it all up, then boil/reduce it down to about half.
The onions and mushrooms were simple, cut them up, then fry them up.
I added about half of the glaze to the mushrooms and onions. Then I added a bit more to my burger. I like a lot of flavor.
Here is a picture of the sourdough buns before they went into the oven. One of them is almost round…
But did I mention they tasted good?
Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Bourbon
- 1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup BBQ Sauce
- 1 TSP Lemon Juice
- 2 cloves Garlic, crushed
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Mix all the ingredients in a small pot.
- Bring to a boil while stirring.
- Turn down the heat to simmer, reduce the amount by half. Stirring as needed.

Chris, being thrilled is an understatement, however some good food was on site. Looks like my time in NJ will be somewhat limited in view of my newly arranged diet, however to overcome this problem I am sure you can come up with a new recipe to help me out on this and it may also be benificial for new postings.
